The Remarkable Journey of Randles Court’s 1947 Neon Sign
As the owners of Historic Randles Court in Eldon, Missouri, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing many stories unfold within our walls over the last few years we’ve owned it. One of the most remarkable stories is that of the neon sign. This iconic sign, which has welcomed travelers for decades, nearly met it’s doom in 2019 when a tornado swept through the area, leaving our beloved neon in pieces.
The Storm That Tested Time
In the spring of 2019, a powerful tornado tore through Eldon, causing significant damage to homes and businesses in the community. Randles Court was not spared from the storm's wrath. Seeing the 1947 neon sign in ruins was heartbreaking. It represented not only an invaluable piece of our history, but that of a lost art from a bygone era.
A Determined Restoration
The destruction of the neon sign presented quite the challenge, but it also ignited a determination within me. The sign was left in 22 pieces scattered across the property. Each piece was miraculously found and collected. I knew that restoring this piece of history was essential. The pieces were all there, they couldn’t just be tossed to the scrap yard. The goal was clear: to restore the neon sign to its former glory and ensure it could light up the nights at Randles Court once again.
The Restoration Process by MidState Signs
Restoring a neon sign from 1947 is no small feat. The process involved meticulous attention to detail, as each piece of the sign had to be carefully maneuvered, bent, & flattened in order to attach to a new frame. We were fortunate to partner with MidState Signs, whose crew worked tirelessly to bring our sign back to life. Using their knowledge & expertise, they ensured the sign was as authentic as possible. The neon tubes were recreated to match the original brightness, and the metal framework was redone to withstand future storms.
A Symbol of Perseverance
On May 22, 2020, exactly one year after the devastating tornado, in the midst of the COVID pandemic, we unveiled the restored neon sign to the community. The moment was celebrated with a grand lighting celebration, attended by family & friends, and members of the community who watched from their cars. Seeing the sign glow brightly once again was a deeply emotional moment for our entire family. It stood as a testament to our perseverance and dedication to preserving the past for the future.
A Beacon for the Future
Today, the 1947 neon sign at Randles Court continues to welcome guests with its vibrant glow. It serves as a reminder of our motor court's rich history and the enduring spirit of our journey. For visitors, it offers a glimpse into the past, while for us, it stands as a symbol of what can be achieved through unwavering determination.
As you drive through Eldon, when you pass by and see the neon lighting the night sky, know it’s more than just a marker for a place to stay; it’s a piece of living history, lovingly restored, and a shining example of the power of perseverance.
